How to Increase Traffic on a Website

How to Increase Traffic on a Website

An Analogy

How to increase traffic on a website, this is the million dollar question?  I think of internet traffic as automobile traffic.  I like to use the following analogy:

I live in sunny southernCalifornia, we have freeways going everywhere and in a sense southernCaliforniais like the internet.  There are thousands of businesses with traffic all around.

We search all of southern California and find out that there are people making great amounts of cash from selling fruit (Google Niche Search).  In California Fruit stands generally do very well so in our analogy our website is going to be a fruit stand.

We know through our search that a fruit stand is going to be very lucrative for us so we build a site.  Now let us say for the sake of argument that there is a forested area next to the freeway which in essence is the area where all new websites must start. We buy the plot. (our internet provider like Hostgator), we name your company (Domain name) keeping in mind that our domain name must have the word “fruit” in it so that people know that we have fruit for sale which will be our long tail keyword.

Now we have the location next to the freeway and our fruit stand business is now called Organically Grown Fruit Company (organicallygrownfruit.com).  Apparently this site is for sale most likely for a gazillion dollars if anyone is interested though not from me, sorry I digressed bit there.

In our analogy we have a fruit stand in the forest next to the freeway but none of the traffic on the freeway can see our site. Even if they did see it, there is no off ramp to get to our fruit stand.

To make sales we need traffic so how do we get traffic?  Initially we are simply a site that is lost in obscurity. Just starting out we are like a person on the side of the road with a sign in our hands announcing our new web site.  But people are whizzing by at breakneck speeds and never really see us standing there.  We do could do this for days, weeks, months, or even years though this is a strategy that will not bear fruit?

Many entrepreneurs follow this business plan, and if that is all we do we will not be very successful.  Getting our fruit stand built is only the first step.  Now we have got to drive traffic to our fruit stand or no one will purchase anything from us .

Google, Yahoo and Bing are like the road department that must keep the traffic moving and they send traffic to us in one of two ways provided they know that we even exist.  One way to get traffic would be Adwords where we pay a commission every time they send someone to our site like a toll road.

It is like Google informing the traffic that if they are looking for a fruit, move in the right hand lane because there is a fruit stand at the next exit.  We would then give Google money every time someone exited the freeway and went to our site.  This is commonly known as PPC or Pay Per Click.

The other way for Google, Bing or Yahoo to send traffic is because they believe we are so popular that the traffic would be interested in our fruit stand.  Kind of like the road department putting up a great big signs informing people that we are here. Something like Disneyland five miles ahead, Disneyland two miles ahead and then finally Disneyland Next Exit making sure that everyone knows that Disneyland exists and it is just around the corner.

Once we have grown large enough the Search engines will make an off ramp to our site. When we have enough link juice Google will then recommend our fruit stand/site to all those who search for “fruit stands”

How do we get link juice? One way is to go somewhere there are a lot of people that would be interested in fruit. So we go someplace like a bake sale where there are people from all around California that are using Fruit and vegetables to make there goodies (niche focused forums).

While visiting, we make comments on how good their products are and leave a calling card (forum signature) if they are interested they will come to our fruit stand/website where they will find the freshest and finest fruit around.

We receive the link juice when people start visiting our fruit stand and start recommending our fruit stand/website to other people. Google sees all these people pointing other people to our site and deduce that our fruit stand must be of some importance. (It is kind of ironic that the more traffic we get the more traffic the search engines will send to us).

Another tactic that we could use would be to place signs strategically so that after seeing our signs people/traffic will go to our fruit stand. Essentially writing articles and placing them in article directories.

Another tactic that we could use would be to strategically place signs (writing articles), it would be like placing ads on billboards on roads leading to our fruit stand. Some examples would be “Bananas 5 miles ahead”; “Tomatoes 4 miles ahead”; peaches 3 miles ahead etc.

We could telling motorists that we have bananas at the fruit stand next exit.  But we must ensure each of our signs are different because if they are all the same each subsequent sign will be ignored. For example if people did not like bananas they would not visit our stand if bananas were all we advertised. It is better to write five different articles for five different directories then it is to write one article for five different directories.

Once the road department (Google) starts to see people pointing (links) to our site. They will take note of it and place up a very big sign that proclaims that there is a fruit stand/website next exit, which they highly recommend you visit (listing our site on page one of a Google search).

Once Google has indexed your site the traffic will flow it just takes time so stick to it and work on getting your link juice.
